Lemesos (Limassol) Medieval Castle
Within close proximity of the old port, in the middle of the historic centre of the city, is Lemesos (Limassol) Castle, originally built to guard and protect the harbour and the city itself. Today ithouses part of the Medieval collection of the Department of Antiquities. The present form of the castle (rectangular shape with walls measuring, in some areas, two metres in thickness and an entrance through the guard office) dates to the Ottoman period (1590).
The earliest reference of a castle in Lemesos dates back to AD 1228. According to Stefano Lusignan, a medieval historiographer, the original castle was built in 1193, but there is no evidence to prove this. However, archaeological evidence does point to the existence of a small church dating to the 4th–7th cent. AD and a Middle Byzantine structure (10th–11th cent. AD) in the area of the castle, while a 12m high apse points to the existence of a single-aisled church of French gothic architecture from the 13th century AD. The castle was destroyed multiple times during the historical periods that followed, both by invaders (Genoese, Egyptian Mamelukes and Ottomans) and by forces of nature such as earthquakes (15th and 16th cent. AD) and fires.
In 1948 the castle was given to the Department of Antiquities to be used as the Lemesos District Archaeological Museum until 1964, while in 1987 the castle opened its doors again as the Medieval Museum of Cyprus. In its rooms, there are objects on display that reflect the civil, financial, social, religious and artistic life of Cyprus as well as other aspects of everyday life on the island from the 3rd to the 19th century AD. The artefacts displayed include weaponry, armour, tools, pottery (byzantine, medieval, Islamic glazed and utilitarian wares), bronze and glass objects, wood-carvings, lamps, jewellery, coins, and objects of worship as well as tombstones and architectural elements from Byzantine and Gothic structures. A new exhibit was recently added: the skeleton of soldier who fell at the hands of the Ottoman invaders of Lefkosia (Nicosia) in 1590 and was killed. In the gardens of the castle there is a mosaic floor from the church of Agia Mavri in Alassa (5th-6th cent. AD) as well as a reconstructed olive press from an area close to the Kouris river (7th–9th cent. AD).
The historical periods represented in the exhibition halls of the Cyprus Medieval Museum are as follows:
